Best Man Speech Questionnaire

This should get you thinking about the material you might want to use in your best man speech. It will be invaluable if I help you write it. I look forward to hearing from you!

Your Name and Contact Details

The Wedding

When is it (time and date?)
Where are the service and reception being held?
Do you know anything interesting / relevant / funny about the venues?
Who is hosting it?

The context for your speech

At what stage in the event will you be speaking?
Who is giving the other speeches and what will they mainly be talking about?
What’s the order of speeches?
Are you responding to a toast to the bridesmaids (usual). If so, do we need to mention them?
I assume you’ll be finishing with a toast? If so, who to (usually the happy couple)?

Your speaking style

What proportion of the speech would you like to be sincere and what proportion funny?
Are you, by nature, shy or extrovert?
How nervous will you be when you stand up to speak?

Audience

How many people will be there?
How many of them will know you?
Do you expect it to be a relatively sedate or loud atmosphere?

The groom

What’s his name and age?
How do you know him?
When did you meet him?
Where and when was he born?
Where did he go to school?
Are there any great stories associated with this period?
Did he go to college / University? Any stories here?
What was his first job?
What jobs has he done subsequently? Any great work stories?
What does he do now?
Could you describe him physically?
Could you describe his personality in three words?
What are his main hobbies / interests?
Can you give a brief outline of his family situation?
Can you give an example of a great story or two that you’ve been involved in with him (when was it?)
If there was a theme to hold your description of him / her together, what would it be?
Just dump any emotional / friendly / nostalgic sentiments here and I’ll work them in.

The bride

What’s her name?
Can you give a brief outline of her life?
How did she meet the groom?
When did he first mention her to you?
When did your ealise things were getting serious?
What do you remember about meeting her?
How did he propose?
How has he changed (for the better!) as a result of her influence?

Any other subjects

Who else do you want to mention and what do you want to say about them? Don’t focus too much on the Stag do – it tends to bore people who weren’t invited!

Taboo subjects

What can’t we mention?

Are there subjects not covered above that you know will amuse / interest your audience?

Please give me as much detail as possible, particularly if we won’t be meeting up to chat this through before I start writing.
