We write a lot of speeches and there’s no doubt that the best man has the hardest job of all. You’ve got to be funny but you can’t push things too far at the risk of offending any number of sensitive souls in the room.
It’s all about creating the right balance, demonstrating why you are best friends with the groom (and why you value that friendship so much) whilst having an appropriate level of fun at his expense.
The key to everything is the word ‘appropriate’. You’ve got to write that speech not just with him and all the revolting stories about him in mind, but also considering what his great aunt and new in-laws might have to say if they heard the whole lot.
