Birthday Speech
“You are the best!!! The speech went down brilliantly well. Thank you so very much. I will tell the world ‘if you want a speech writer you want Lawrence Bernstein.’ Look forward to working with you again.” – Julian H.
If you’ve reached this page, we assume you are either having a birthday party, or that you’ve been asked by a friend to speak at theirs.
To get the sales pitch out the way at the start, we can help write it for you, or edit something you have already written. We have written countless speeches for clients speaking at 18th, 21st, 30th and 40th etc birthday parties.
The key, as ever, is to make it relevant and appropriate. And, where possible to sprinkle a little magic to ensure that your speech is remembered for all the right reasons.
And so we don’t start by asking about your life, memories or favourite jokes, but about your audience.
Who will be there? What sort of atmosphere will there be in the room? What balance do you seek between sincerity and humour? What do you want them to remember?
We work backwards from there.
If you are speaking about yourself, the best bet is to be humble, self-deprecating and funny. Try to broaden the speech so it isn’t just about you and your life to date, but about the friends and family with whom you have shared it and wish to continue to do so.
If you are giving a birthday speech about someone else, you have to tread a fine line between playing ‘best man’ and ‘father of the bride’. On one hand you don’t want to be too rude or brash, on the other this isn’t the moment to go all soppy.
The answer is a fine balance between humour, sincerity, lightness of touch and sentimentality.
We have a bunch of questions we’d be delighted to send through to help you gather the requisite information for your birthday speech. You can then decide whether to take it on yourself or to ask us for some help!
Please call us on 0207 118 1600, contact us by Skype or email, or, if it’s more convenient, fill-in the contact form on the right hand side of this page and we’ll get straight back to you.
